Sexual assault and abuse is any type of sexual activity that you do not agree to, including inappropriate touching, rape, and child molestation.

Myths

  Facts
You asked to be raped.  

Rape occurs because the rapist wants to overpower, control and humiliate the victim, not because of the victim's actions.


Rape is no big deal.  

Rape is a violent crime, which can be life-threatening and psychologically damaging


It cannot happen to me.  

Rape can happen to women, children and men of all races and social classes. It often happens in their own home by someone they know.


Rape is for sex.

  A rapist's motive is power and rage. The rapist often has an active sex life.

No one can be raped against their will.

 

When raped, the victim is threatened with violence, bodily harm and even death.


If I report this, my past sexual activities will be used against me.

 

Because of new laws. your past experiences cannot be brought out in court.

Anyone can be a victim of sexual assault: women, children or men. Rape affects more than just the person assaulted. Family and friends of the victims also have feelings of fear, anger and guilt. Each member of the family needs support.
