Domestic violence is a repeated pattern of actual or threatened acts that emotionally, physically, or sexual sexually hurts another person.

Facts

  • A woman is battered every 9 seconds in this country.

  • An estimated 59% of women murdered in this country are killed by husbands, lovers, or former partners after being abused for years.

  • Wife-beating is the most under-reported crime in the country, with the actual incidences estimated to be 10 times higher than what is reported.

  • 60-80% of battering men and 50% of battered women came from violent homes.

  • 25% of all female victims of domestic violence are beaten while they are pregnant; frequently, that's when the violence starts.

  • 3-5 million women and children are the primary victims of family violence every year.

Fear of serious injury or death to herself, her family, and being unable to financially support her family continues to trap women in extremely violent and dangerous situations...particularly when children are involved.

The phases of domestic violence:

  1. Tension Building - increasing tension, anger, blaming, and arguing.

  2. Explosion - Release of physical and emotional pressure by hitting, slapping, kicking, choking, and/or use of objects, weapons, sexual abuse or verbal abuse.

  3. Honeymoon - He calms down, promises never to hurt her again, says he's sorry, brings flowers and gifts.

In this cycle, each incident of violence becomes more frequent and severe.
